Warnings of invasive salmon in Irish waterways

Tipperary anglers and members of the public are being asked to be on the lookout for a non native species of salmon which has invaded Irish waterways.

Over 30 Pacific Pink salmon have been caught here since June and their origins remain a mystery.

It is not yet known what impact they could have on native salmon stocks here but there are fears that the Pink salmon could carry parasites which could be deadly to Irish salmon.

Dr Patrick Gargan is Senior Reseach Officer with Inland Fisheries, he’s calling on anglers to let them know if they catch any pink salmon
