New Garda Unit Not Enough, Says AGSI

It's after the government announced funding of 5 million euro towards Garda overtime and a new armed support unit – to include 55 Gardaí following two fatal gangland shootings in the last week.

David Byrne was fatally shot at Drumcondra's Regency Hotel on Friday while, Eddie Hutch Senior was shot dead at his home in North Strand on Monday.

But, the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors has described the funding as a 'drop in the ocean'.

The AGSI's Deputy General Secretary, John Jacob, says he wants to know if the new unit will mean the 'reassignment' of 55 Gardaí from other frontline operational duties.
