Gender Recognition Bill to be discussed in the Dail today.

The draft legislation has been working its way through both Houses of the Oireachtas.

If enacted, it would allow passports and other civil registration documents to recognise a person's new gender – in the case where someone has chosen to change it.

It comes amid widespread international coverage of Caitlyn Jenner – formerly American athlete Bruce Jenner – in recent days.

Minister Brendan Howlin says a 'fair minded' Irish Government and public will look to help the transgender community.
