15 year-old Hassan Taiwo had just scored a goal for Merlin Woods in the match against Salthill Devon in Doughiska yesterday afternoon when he became ill.

Paramedics at the scene treated Hassan Taiwo when he collapsed shortly before one o'clock yesterday afternoon.

An ambulance arrived within minutes and rushed him to University Hospital Galway, where he died.

Hassan was a Junior Cert student at St Josephs's school.

He's being described as a boy who was always smiling and volunteered his time to help teachers train younger pupils on how to play soccer.

His two older brothers had previously attended the same school and he was a member of the Relay Athletics team that came 4th in the All-Ireland Athletics Championship last year.

The school says its two counsellors are available to students and a psychologist has also been brought in to help his friends and schoolmates come to terms with the tragedy.
