The woman, who was 53, is understood to have been part of a group that were fishing on rocks near Fanore at Ballyreen when she went into the water at about a quarter to nine this morning.
Doolin Coastguard rescued her from the water and she was rushed to University Hospital Galway by Shannon Rescue 115 where she has since passed away.
