Tipperary man loses appeal against a life sentence.

A Tipperary man has lost his appeal against his sentence for the attempted murder of a young girl.

In February of 2003 Eric Daniels from Clonmel pleaded guilty to attempting to strangle the 10 year old to see what it was like to kill someone.

Daniels was 18 when he lured the young girl into a field near his home in Elm Park on the pretext of looking for some puppies.

There he tried to strangle her with a bootlace – the girl pretended she was dead and was able to escape and raise the alarm.

After his arrest Eric Daniels told Gardai in Clonmel that he had wanted to see what it would be like to kill somebody.

He was sentenced to life in prison by the Central Criminal Court – with Mr Justice Paul Carney saying he had no confidence that Daniels would not try this again.

An appeal against the sentence was rejected by the Court of Criminal Appeal in 2006.

The 29 year old took his case to the Supreme Court yesterday asking it to rule whether the sentence constituted preventative detention.

The five-judge court unanimously ruled it was a proper sentence under Irish law.
