The 14 year old was in the River Shannon with his friends when he got into difficulty just before six yesterday evening.
His friends called for the assistance of the Athlone Sub Aqua Club – who were on the water training at the time – and the teen was recovered quickly.

The boy was transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin last night and his condition is described as critical.
