Questions raised about plans to tackle Tipperary’s social housing needs

Plans to address the social housing crisis in Tipperary have been branded as too broad and unworkable for areas like Thurles.

The Environment Minister is due to unveil funding allocations to county councils nationwide which will result in a programme of house purchase, long term lease, rent and new build.

Local authority officials say the plan here will be frontloaded by house purchase and that monies for the development of new homes will be in small clusters.

However Thurles Independent Councillor Jim Ryan says that's just not workable for either the mid-Tipp town or Templemore and Roscrea.

Meanwhile housing officials say that they are already driving ahead with the existing applications for local authority housing while awaiting the national grant allocations.

4 homes were purchased between November and January while councillors were also informed that as of a fortnight ago the council is actively looking at buying 20 more right across county Tipperary.

Local Fianna Fail Councillor Seamus Hanafin has welcomed this but he also questions the actual number of people requiring a local authority home. He suggests a number of people on the housing list are merely doing so to get rent allowance.
