North Tipperary wind farm challenge fast tracked.

A legal challenge against a €70 million windfarm in North Tipp is to be heard next May.

Ecopower Developments Ltd was granted permission for the project near Upperchurch by An Bord Pleanala despite strong local opposition.

The 22 turbines would have a maximum height of over 126 metres – they would be located around 2 kilometres from the village of Upperchurch.

The company behind the plans – Ecopower Developments – say they would generate enough electricity to power 23,000 homes or the equivalent of North Tipperary’s domestic electricity requirement.

Edel Grace of Grousehall, Milestone and Edward Buckley of Gurtnara, Upperchurch have taken their opposition to the 22 wind turbines to the courts.

Ecopower have applied to have the challenge fast tracked to the Commercial Court list.

Mr Justice Brian McGovern yesterday admitted the case and has set a date for May 2015.

The project would create 110 jobs during the construction phase with 6 jobs when the windfarm was operational.
