The Justice Minister has published the Bill to establish the Garda Síochana Policing Authority today.
Frances Fitzgerald has described it as the most far reaching reform of An Garda Síochana since the foundation of the state.
The Authority will have oversight of the force and will be responsible for making senior appointments, as well as removing senior Gardaí in some circumstances.
It will also hold the Garda Commissioner to account on policing matters and will have a role in senior appointments.
