Kelly speaks out on Labour leadership

In his first on-air interview since Brendan Howlin was chosen as the new leader of the Labour party, Alan Kelly spoke to Tipp Today with Fran Curry this morning.

Amid intense national attention, the Portroe native admitted it's been a difficult few days, after he failed to get a seconder for his bid to become the head of the party.

Alan Kelly says that an ultimatum from Howlin is what led to his failure to get a nomination.

However, he says the thought of leaving the Labour Party never entered his head.

The deputy said he planned on playing a large role in the rebuilding of the party.

Meanwhile, the new Labour leader has warned that the current Government won't survive more than a few months.

Brendan Howlin says the Fine Gael led minority administration is 'intrinsically unstable'.

Fine Gael has already been forced to pass a mortgage reform bill that it objected to.

The Fianna Fáil legislation was passed last week because they had a big enough majority to ensure the bill's success.

Brendan Howlin says that's a sign of underlying instability.
