Three other people, including a young girl, were injured in the collision.
The fatal crash happened on the northbound carriageway of the M1 just after Junction 15 Castlebellingham at around 10.30pm.
A man in his 40s who is believed to be from Co. Louth died at the scene.
Two women, who were the drivers of the other cars, and a 10 year old girl are currently being treated at Our Lady of Lourdes hospital in Drogheda.
A forensic investigation is being carried out at the scene and witnesses are being asked to contact Ardee Garda Station at 041 6871130.
