Gov to meet to allocate flood relief funding

The Minister for the Environment, Tipperary’s Alan Kelly, is expected to seek an additional ten million euro to help worst hit communities.

A crisis meeting is due in Government Buildings today of all the State agencies with responsibility for the River Shannon.

The meeting of Shannon agencies today will examine interim solutions for over 60 communities along the Shannon which are vulnerable in the meantime, with water levels on Lough Ree now at an all-time high.

The ESB, Bord na Mona, the National Park and Wildlife Service and Waterways Ireland are among the agencies that will attend today's meeting.

The Mayor of Athlone Cllr Tom Farrell, says more co-operation is vital to tackle the flooding problems facing communities along the Shannon.
