Thurles’ most senior garda is urging people not to conduct their own night patrols through housing estates in an effort to deter criminals.

Superintendent Gerry Delmar was speaking at a public meeting in the town last night about establishing a local Community Alert Scheme.

It comes in the wake of a spate of break-ins in the Mid Tipp Town in recent months which has left many residents deeply concerned – sparking some individuals to effectively police their own areas.

Around 150 people attended the gathering in the Anner Hotel.

However Superintendent Delmar warns this could see people branded as vigilantes which would benefit no-one.

He also moved to reassure householders that all recent criminal incidents are being fully investigated with a high detection rate in relation to burglaries.
