Full inquiry into mother and baby homes likely

There are further indications that the government will set up a full inquiry into Ireland's mother and baby homes.

According to the Irish Times, the Children's Minister is expected to tell the cabinet today that such an investigation is now likely to be held.

It comes amid controversy over the number of deaths at one such home in Tuam County Galway, and a nearby grave where it's thought hundreds of children could be buried.

Last week the government announced a number of departments were looking at the issue, and Minister Charlie Flanagan will update his colleagues today on their progress.

Sinn Fein will table a private members motion in the Dail later today, calling for an independent judicial inquiry to be set up immediately.
