Former farm leader to stand for Fianna Fáil in Tipperary constituency.

The former ICMSA President secured 454 votes in the end- 73 more than his nearest competitor Michael Smith.

It's expected HQ will add a second candidate to the ticket closer to the election to ensure a North South balance.

After 3 hours of voting followed by a count which lasted just over an hour Jackie Cahill was chosen as Tipp Fianna Fáil's choice of candidate to contest a Dáil seat in the now united constituency.

His opponents were gracious in defeat – Martin Mansergh who secured over 37 first preferences and was eliminated after the first count – told the 1,000 plus present that Fianna Fáil was the alternative and ready to take up that role.

Imelda Goldsboro vowed she would be back to contest once again and that by hook or crook Tipp FF would take back 2 seats while Siobhán Ambrose said the party was glowing now and that everybody must get behind the chosen candidate.

Councillor Cahill's closest challenger Michael Smith – who secured the highest first preference of all five at 300 – said while it was a disappointment it was a historic event have Fianna Fail north and south united once again.

Jackie Cahill paid tribute to four fellow councillors- Roger Kennedy, Seamus Hanafin, John Hogan and Mattie Ryan Coole for campaigning with him – and had special words for of thanks for his family.
