Farmers vow to ‘Fight the Pipe’

Farmers in North Tipperary have vowed to fight proposals to bring a water pipe through their lands to supply Dublin.

Irish Water have identified the preferred route for the 172 kilometre pipe from Parteen Basin in Tipperary to the east of the country.

Tipp farmer Liam Minihen of the Fight the Pipe group is vehemently opposed to the proposed route for the pipeline project which was announced this week by Irish Water.

The preferred route emerged after nine different potential options were examined…the pipe will run from the Parteen Basin in Tipperary to a termination point at Peamount in Dublin.

The pipeline, which is expected to cost between €700 million and €900 million to build, is scheduled to be completed by 2024.

Irish Water expects that about 1,000 jobs will be created during the three to four year construction phase.

Local opposition to the project has gathered pace with local farmers claiming the pipe will destroy the quality of the land it goes under.

Liam Minihen says the compensation on offer from Irish Water is not the issue

While Pat Slattery is concerned that he will have to cut back on the amount of livestock on his property

For his part, Liam Minihen is convinced that this is not the only option available to Irish Water to solve the issue.

Irish Water will hold public consultations on the proposed route over the next 14 weeks…with information evenings due to take place next week.
