So far this year, six people have been killed on the county's roads – that's more than the entire 12 months of 2015.
Gardaí have mounted additional checkpoints across the county this weekend targetting drink driving, speed, the wearing of seat belts and the use of mobile phones.
Inspector Eddie Golden says people need to be extra careful when on the roads and adjust their driving to the conditions.
