Council under fire for Excel drama

Works are to take place at the building to facilitate the town library at the centre on Mitchell Street.

It had been thought that these works to would be carried out with no major impact on the day-to-day running of the Excel Centre.

The building is home to the Simon Ryan Theatre, an art gallery and cinema, while it also plays host to dance classes and workshops.

The work to relocate the library from Dan Breen House to the Excel was supposed to start on April 1st and take six months.

However Ann Marie Ryan from the French Quarter café in the centre claims they only found out last Thursday that the contractors would need vacant possession during the building works.

A meeting yesterday appears to have resolved the issue with the works to be spread out over 32 weeks to allow the centre to remain open.

Sinn Féin Councillor Martin Browne says while they have managed to reach a compromise there are bound to be some disturbances during the works.

He says it's vital that the contractor taking on the project engages with those working at the Excel.

20 people are employed at the Excel while the French Quarter café has another 9 people working there.

Many felt the closure would put the long term prospects for all of these jobs under threat, not just for the planned closure period.

Fine Gael's John Crosse says serious mistakes were made by the Council executive in the way issue has been dealt with up to now.
