Clonmel, Carrick on Suir, Kilsheelan, Cahir and Ardfinnan were among the worst affected with families either forced to flee or were evacuated from their homes.
Dozens of routes right across the county were either closed or reduced to one lane because of heavy flooding while a number of areas were completely cut off with the army called in to help assist families.
The immediate risk of flooding in a number of areas abated yesterday after levels on the river Suir remained steady.
Pockets of rural areas in South Tipperary were hit hard including in parts of Ballingarry, Drangan and Mullinahone with a number of homes flooded.
Local Fianna Fail Councillor Imelda Goldsboro says action is needed now to address this.
Meanwhile Michael D. Higgins will visit flood affected communities in South Galway and Enniscorthy in County Wexford today.
First on the agenda is Labane village south county Galway – Cathaoirleach of the local authority Peter Roche says the community is humbled by his visit.
In Westmeath, efforts are continuing to find accommodation for around 160 residents of an apartment complex in Athlone who were evacuated last night.
The residents of the Bastion Quay apartments were asked to leave their homes after part of a nearby ESB substation became submerged in flood waters.
Before last night 260 homes across the country had been evacuated as a result of the flooding.
