Tipperary woman who competed in 1948 Olympics

 

A Tipperary women who competed in the 1948 Olympic Games is at the age of 103 one of the oldest Olympians still alive today.

  Cloughjordan native ,Dorothy Dermody  , competed in the fencing competition at the 1948 Games in the Individual Foil discipline.

Apart from her sporting prowess  she  once led a campaign to have a playground installed in every school in  the country and  was renowned for her efforts to get children involved in swimming and diving.

She continues to live in Dublin, but was unable to attend the commemorative event for 1948 Olympians at Farmleigh earlier this month.
