The phenomenon of “The disappeared” – the abduction and secret execution of people by the IRA is one of the controversial aspects of modern Irish history. Whilst most people in Ireland and Britain associate the phenomenon with the twenty or so of the Provisional IRA’s victims who were disappeared in Northern Ireland the reality is that a far greater number of people were disappeared by their predecessors in the so called “Old-IRA” during the Irish War of Independence and Civil War.
