Wind farm opponents in North Tipperary to bring the matter to the High Court

Eco-Power Developments Limited have been given the green light by An Bord Pleanala to proceed with a 22 wind turbine wind farm in Kilcommon-Upperchurch despite objections from several groups including An Taisce and local residents.

However, there are some residents who support the project and say it will bring some much-needed employment to the rural area.

Edel Grace, from the Kilcommon-Upperchurch Wind Awareness Group is pledging to fight the decision by An Bord Pleanala to uphold the planning permission along with a second farm at Keeper Hill.

The state planning appeals board has granted permission with revised conditions for the Kilcommon project which will consist of turbines will reach up to 126 meters high – the plans also include two masts with wind measuring equipment, a substation and control building.

The Kilcommon Upperchurch Wind Awareness Group was among a dozen groups or individuals to lodge objections with An Bord Pleanala.

Edel Grace says that she doesn't believe that the project would benefit the community.

However, some locals are pledging their support for the developments with Con Ryan saying that the employment the construction would bring to the community along with the rent it will bring farmers is badly needed.

Papers to appeal the decision must be lodged with the High Court within the next eight weeks.
