Freelance doctors are blackmailing hospitals by holding a wildcat strike, according to a surgeon in one of the affected hospitals.
A number of emergency departments may have to close because of the lack of agency staff, but all remain open at the moment.
Among those affected is University Hospital Limerick which covers North Tipperary.
The Health Minister has called for the dispute to be resolved through proper channels.
