Weather warning issued tonight across the country

Motorists are being urged to prepare for icy conditions as temperatures are set to plummet tonight.

A status yellow snow and ice warning is in place for Connacht, Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal.

Temperatures are also expected to reach freezing point across the Premier County as well – Tipperary County Council will be deploying their gritting crews as necessary.

A total of eleven crews are rostered to pre-salt a number of routes with priority being given to the M7 and M8 Motorways, National Roads and Regional Roads of strategic importance.

Met Éireann says very cold, wintry weather will continue until the weekend.

However it won't be as severe as witnessed in continental Europe in recent days – as forecaster Joan Blackburn explained.
