Water meter installation getting underway in North Tipperary.

The first step towards water charges in North Tipp begins today.

Work on the roll-out of meters at housing estates around the Ballina and Newport areas is getting underway.

Homes across North Tipperary are next on the list for the installation of water meters.

Works are scheduled to commence in the Nenagh and Newport electoral areas from today.

Initially, contractors working on behalf of Irish Water will be installing water meters outside of properties in the Ballina area – the work will then move on to other areas in the north of the county.

Irish Water say the installation will take between 15 minutes and two hours and while the water supply will be interrupted, the utilities company say it will do everything it can to minimise disruption to householders.

Home owners will be charged for water from the final quarter of this year with the first bill due to be issued in January of 2015.
