Warm tributes paid to the late Jimmy Doyle

The two-time All Ireland Captain is considered one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

During his career Jimmy Doyle won 6 All Irelands as well as 9 Munster and 7 National League titles – he was also included on the hurling team of the century and the hurling team of the Millennium.

Burgess native and 5 time All Ireland winner Donie Nealon – who soldiered with Jimmy for many years – described him as a gifted hurler while fellow team-mate Tony Wall says the Thurles Sarsfields man showed his skill from an early age playing with the Senior squad while still a Minor.

Jimmy Doyle has been described as a 'lynchpin' of his club Thurles Sarsfields with club chairman Michael Maher saying he always had an interest in club games and would appear at many matches.

Thurles Councillor and newly elected Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council Seamus Hanafin said Jimmy was a great ambassador for both club and county.

Several political representatives have also paid warm tributes to Jimmy Doyle. Environment Minister and Portroe native Alan Kelly, who officially opened Jimmy Doyle Road in Thurles in 2012, said the hurling legend was a genius on the hurling field and a gentleman off it.Holycross Deputy Michael Lowry said despite all his achievements and fame he remained humble and gracious and that Jimmy was blessed with a personality which was quiet, unassuming and kind hearted.

Jimmy Doyle will repose at Sarsfields Social Centre, Semple Stadium tomorrow evening from 4 o'clock until 8 with removal to the Church of St. Joseph and St. Brigid, Bothar na Naomh, arriving at 8.30

His funeral mass will be on Thursday morning at 10 am with funeral afterwards to the Island Crematorium, Cork.
