War of words as WRC and SIPTU clash over Luas dispute

The head of the Workplace Relations Commission says he has no intention of standing down, after being called on to do so by the President of SIPTU.

The Transport Minister says he won't intervene in the row, and spend taxpayers' money on it.

Luas drivers are striking tomorrow and on Sunday, after overwhelmingly rejecting a pay deal brokered at the WRC last week.

Transdev management and SIPTU are in a deadlock after drivers rejected a pay deal brokered at the Workplace Relations Commission- which would have seen an increase of around 18 percent in under three years.

Now a war of words has broken out after WRC chief Kieran Mulvey told RTE Radio One he believed the proposal was the best they could get and this prompted SIPTU President Jack O'Connor to call on him to resign.

Kieran Mulvey hit back saying he had no intention of standing down, saying his focus was on finding a deal acceptable to both sides, while ending the inconvenience to Luas passengers.

Luas drivers have called on the Transport Minister to intervene in the row, but Paschal Donohoe's ruled that out, saying the WRC has his full confidence.
