Tourism bosses hope for major visitor boost from Stars Wars

'Star Wars – The Force Awakens' spent several days recording scenes on Skellig Michael off the coast of Kerry.

Environmentalists criticised the use of the world heritage site, which is home to native seabirds, but a report by the National Parks and Wildlife Service claimed there'd been no adverse impact.

The movie is due to open here before Christmas and Tourism Ireland's CEO Niall Gibbons says he's happy we'll be linked to the Star Wars brand.

The organisation is predicting more than 8 million tourists will visit Ireland in 2016.

Today its launching plans to promote Ireland abroad next year with new marketing for Ireland's “Ancient East” which takes in parts of Tipperary including Holycross, The Rock of Cashel and sites in Cahir and Fethard.
