Tipp’s emergency services outline stark impact of road crashes.

It's all part of a week long campaign on Tipp Fm in conjunction with local Gardaí and the emergency services in an effort to try and raise awareness and curb the carnage.

Speaking on Tipp Today Garda Cathal Naughton from Nenagh pointed out the stark reality of road fatalities in this country and the impact that they have on whole communities.

From 2004 to 2104 2,933 people were killed on Ireland’s roads – the equivalent of the population of Cashel being wiped out.

Gardai are more often than not the first at the scene of collisions and along with paramedics and fire officers they have the extremely difficult task of dealing with the aftermath of a single vehicle or multi car pile up.

Within the past five years – 62 people have lost their lives on the county's roads – 17 alone last year – including mothers, fathers, children, grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins.

Paramedic Noel Flynn – who is a Supervisor with the Mid West National Ambulance Service feels everybody who gets into a car should be made aware of the horrific consequences if there is a crash.

Station Officer with Nenagh Fire Services Anthony Griffin says while dealing with traffic collision is part and parcel of their job, its never easy and more than just the victims can be left with the scars as they too have to live with the horrors they have to deal with.

Tipp Fm's Road Safety Awareness campaign continues this afternoon with Keith Fahy broadcasting live from Tipp Town and distributing high-viz vests – while tomorrow morning Aidan Mac will be highlighting the importance of road safety in Cashel on the Breakfast BLT with Brian and Lorraine.
