Tipp roads funding welcomed but Cllrs say it’s far short of what’s needed

Almost 18.5 million euro is being provided to the local authority for 2017 with projects like Ardfinnan Bridge and the dangerous junction at Fortmoy in North Tipp set benefit.

However for other projects like the Latteragh bends – the monies provided are seen as just a drop in the ocean of what's actually needed.

While welcoming this year's local roads allocation from government Mid Tipp Councillor Micheál Lowry says the county council is actually down 40 million in road maintenance funds when you really look at the successive cuts to the funding over the past few years.

Ardfinnan Bridge is set to get the lions share of the monies – 800 thousand will be spent on much needed repairs and strengthening after the structure was damaged in the floods in January of last year.

A one way traffic light controlled system has been in place on the busy crossing since – but it’s left many people unhappy who want two way traffic returned as well as a pedestrian crossing.

Local Councillor Martin Lonergan is pleased with the 800 thousand but feels the council should have gone further in its application and looked to construct a cantilever bridge to accommodate pedestrians while leaving a two way traffic system in place.

Other projects set to benefit from the funding include the Old Bridge in Carrick on Suir, the bridge at Glastrigan near Borrisoleigh and Clonbeg Bridge in the Glen of Aherlow.

€100,000 has been earmarked for Fortmoy Junction near Aglish – which is a notorious blackspot.

Local representative Michael O'Meara is calling on the council engineers to engage with locals on this project which he hopes will be completed this year

Meanwhile

300 thousand has been allocated for the Latteragh Bends up from 100 thousand last year – but Independent Cllr Michael Lowry is warning motorists not to expect any real movement on realigning that road between Thurles and Nenagh any time soon.
