Tipp projects to get EU funding

Over three quarters of a million euro has been allocated to projects in Tipperary aimed at stimulating economic development in rural towns and their hinterlands.

The Rural Economic Development Zones initiative will provide funding for 41 projects nationwide to the tune of 5.3 million.

Projects in North and South Tipp will benefit from the allocations announced by Minister Heather Humphries.

The REDZ scheme is one of a number which the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs has been rolling out to support regeneration in rural towns and villages.

This initiative encourages Local Authorities to work with local communities, business interests and other State bodies to identify areas of greatest economic need which can make better use of their assets.

A number of towns stretching across the south of the county will benefit from funding for the Munster Vales project – they include Fethard, Cahir, Carrick on Suir and Tipp Town. €400,000 has been approved for the strategy which extends from the Comeraghs to Ballyhoura incorporating the Galtees and the Knockmealdowns.

200 thousand will be used for the marketing, development and promotion of the Lough Derg Blueway which includes the soon to be completed Lough Derg Canoe Trail.

A similar amount has been approved to develop the sports hub in Clonmel and Ardfinnan which are linked by the Suir.
