Tipp Gardaí to be honoured for saving lives

Four Tipperary Gardaí are being honoured today for their life saving efforts.

It follows an incident in Clonmel last year during which they saved a man from drowning.

Gardaí Mark Holden, Kieran Hayes and Clare Murphy along with Sergeant Kieran O'Regan are among 47 rescuers nationwide being recognised at the Irish Water Safety's annual awards in Dublin today.

On the 17th of August 2015 the Tipperary officers received a call regarding a man who had fallen into the water at New Quay in Clonmel – they immediately attended the scene and Garda Holden and Sergeant O'Regan entered the water – The four Gardaí then managed to bring the man to safety on the banks and waited with him until the emergency services arrived.

Among other others set to receive awards today include Davit Walsh who saved a baby girl in the Buncrana Pier tragedy earlier this year which claimed the lives of five family members, a then 8 year old girl who saved her little brother from drowning in a septic tank in Laois, two young scouts who rescued a local boy from drowning in Turkey, and a garda who had completed water rescue training in Templemore Garda colleague who pulled a man from the Liffey in Dublin.
