Tipp farmers accuse Govt of failing them

It comes as the beef crisis escalates with farmers hit by a 25 percent year on year cut in prices and a continuous tightening of specifications.

The IFA has already hit out at this – criticising factories for trying to force more cattle onto the market by threatening cuts on age and pulling prices despite the trade improving in the UK.

The Irish Farmers Association says new guidelines from British retailers mean that the age limit of beef from bull calves would be reduced from 16 months to 14 months.

But the IFA says this will mean grass cannot be fed to cattle in the traditional manner.

Tipperary Independent TD Michael Lowry is calling for decisive action from the Agriculture Minister before the sector is decimated.
