Tipp districts to elect new Cathaoirleach

Five Cathaoirleach and one mayor will be elected at local authorities meetings across the county over the next week, starting in Mid Tipp this morning.

The new chairs are likely to be voted in through long standing pacts between parties but some Councillors will be calling for the D'Hondt system.

Following his 12 month tenure in office Fianna Fail's John Hogan will be handing over the reigns of power at the annual meeting of Thurles Templemore Municipal District.

If as expected the council votes via the pact system then Fine Gael's Joe Bourke is next in line to take the seat.

Fine Gael also appear set to take the top job in Nenagh when that council holds its annual meeting tomorrow with Cllr Phyl Bugler mooted as the next Cathaoirleach .

On Friday – The entire county council gather in Clonmel to elect an overall Cathaoirleach with Fianna Fail's Siobhan Ambrose in line to take over from her party colleague Seamus Hanafin.

A Fianna Fail representative is also likely to take the position in Cashel Tipp, through Roger Kennedy  when it meets next week; Independent Andy Maloney is tipped to be Clonmel's next Mayor while several names have been mooted for the job in Carrick ..

While most of the new Cathaoirleach will be elected via a pact system- some councillors will again be calling for the D'Hondt system to be used branding the current set up as undemocratic – due to the fact that several members who were elected without reaching the quota will take the top job to the detriment of others who secured a significant portion of the electors votes.
