Thurles Gardaí appeal for witnesses to fatal collision

A female pedestrian, named locally as Elizabeth Balfe, was killed when she was knocked down by a van on a minor road at Moyneard, Moyne on the outskirts of Thurles.
 
This incident happened around 10 past four yesterday evening when the 39 year old woman care assistant was struck by a van travelling on the minor road from Moyneard Cross to Shanballyduff Cross near Moyne.
 
Named locally as Elizabeth Balfe, she was seriously injured and was pronounced dead at the scene…her body was taken to the University Hospital in Limerick.
 
It's understood Ms Balfe, who was originally from Kildare, was living locally and worked at a nursing home in Thurles- She was due to get married later this year.
 
The driver of the van, a 55 year old man, was not injured in the collision.
 
The road from Thurles to Moyne as far as Monard Cross remains closed this morning as Gardaí complete a forensic collision examination.
 
Thurles Gardaí say the road should reopen later this morning.
