The birthplace of the Gaelic Athletic Association in Thurles has a new owner.

The iconic Hayes Hotel on Liberty Square was snapped up at today's Allsops Auction in Dublin and went for well above its reserve price of half a million Euro.

Bidding started slowly at €475,000 and eventually reached a nail biting finish worthy of any All Ireland final, selling for €650,000.

The first of the Tipp lots on offer was 14 Liberty Square in Thurles – it failed to attract any bids despite the best efforts of the auctioneer.

The property is currently home to AIB – it had a reserve of €2.3 million and a rental income of €215,000 per annum.

However 42 units at the Ard Gaoithe Business Park in Clonmel fared better.

12 of those are occupied with a combined annual rent of over €155,000. With a reserve of €790,000 it finally sold for €1,610,000.

There are two other Tipperary properties still to be auctions –  a site outside Tipp Town with a reserve of  €45,000 and another piece of land in Portland, Lorrha which is the €10,000 range.
