Tánaiste again defends a controversial cut to social welfare payments

The government has admitted that the change will see 6,000 single parents lose out – but says it is designed to encourage them to find work.

This morning Tánaiste Joan Burton has told the Dáil that by getting more work, those parents will be far better off.

“If a lone works 19 hours a week at the minimum wage, they would have an income of €165” she said.

“With the changes I've made, that lone parent would get €205 a week in family income supplement; and if they had one child, they would get another €30 “.

“So they would actually get €400 a week” she added.
