Sulky racing issue discussed ahead of Council motion

It’s been a highly contentious issue in the county for many years following incidents of horses being killed or injured, near misses with traffic and animal welfare concerns.

A new motion on a possible ban is back before the county council this summer and on Tipp Today many contributors were very vocal in their opposition to the practice.

Mick from Clonmel got in contact with Fran Curry today about an incident of sulky racing he had come across at the weekend which left him deeply shocked, upset and concerned about the welfare of the animal.

His interview opened the floodgates on today's programme with dozens upon dozens of people getting in touch to relay their views on sulky racing – with most calling for an outright ban.

It’s been a highly contentious issue in the county for many years with regular races along the old N 8 Dublin to Cork road with a number of horses killed during this incidents.

Former Fine Gael Councillor Joe Leahy who introduced the by laws in Clonmel for the control of horses says its a practice that must be stopped – he told Tipp FM's Fran Curry that the powers exist to deal with this but nobody is taking responsibility

Currently it is illegal to have a child under 16 in control of a sulky while all horse drawn vehicles are banned on motorways; however it’s actually not an illegal practice to use a sulky in the county.

The matter came before the local authority last year but members were informed that it wasn't within the council's power to issue such a ban, despite councillors arguing that Kilkenny had done so.

Sinn Fein's David Doran who raised the last motion – says it will be back before the full council in the coming months and he is hopeful of a more positive outcome.
