Suicide rates on the rise

More than 8,790 people involved in self-harm attended hospitals around the country last year.

New figures released by the National Office for Suicide Prevention also reveal there were 487 deaths by suicide in 2013.

While overall rates for suicide in Ireland are relatively low by European comparison, the Health Service Executive says rates among people under 25 are a significant concern.

Director of the National Office for Suicide Prevention Gerry Raleigh says the aim is to see a 10 per cent reduction in the rates of suicide by 2020
