Street closure blamed for impact on business

Kickham Street was closed to traffic in early December when a building was considered to be in a dangerous condition and posed a risk to public safety.

Local residents and businesses say the closure of Kickham Street in Carrick on Suir for the last three months has had a major impact on them.

The closure was ordered on health and safety grounds when a building on the street was deemed dangerous.

The building in question – known as Finnegan's – is in private ownership.

The local authority issued a notice to the owner to make the building safe.

However Marian – who ran the Fits Beautifully shop on Kickham Street – feels the lack of passing traffic was the main factor in her business having to close last Saturday.

Work on the building is expected to take approximately two months – once the building is rendered safe Kickham Street will be reopened to traffic.

The council say they have been irregular contact with local residents and businesses but insist the street will have to remain closed until the building in question no longer poses a risk to public safety.

Marian says it's not just her business which is feeling the effects of the closure – she says it's impacting on the entire town of Carrick.
