Spending Limit Placed On Election Campaigning

The Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan has announced a spending limit period for both candidates and political parties that comes into force next week.

From Tuesday the 25th March, election spending incurred must be included on a declaration made by candidates and parties within 90 days of voting day.

There is a reduction in the amount of money election hopefuls are allowed to spend.

In 2009 the top limit was 15 thousand euro, depending on the population of the electoral area, but this year the spending limit will be either 13 thousand, 11 and a half thousand or 9,750 euro.

The Minister also confirmed that election posters are not allowed to be erected until the 23rd April…30 days before polling day…and must be taken down a week later.

Voting opens on Friday 23rd May at 7am and will remain open until 10pm.
