Ship unloading prevented as farmers protest

The action is in protest at barley being imported from the UK…farmers say merchants are buying in product at cheaper prices instead of supporting Irish growers.

The ship with the barley on board has not been allowed to unload…it was due to leave port at lunchtime.

Speaking to Tipp FM, Chair of the North Tipp IFA Grain Committee Tim Connelly said importing grain is damaging farmers' livelihoods.

George Mason is the vice chair of the National Grain Committee and chairman of the South Tipp Grain Committee…he says the issue affects a large number of Tipp farmers.
