Sharp rise in signing on numbers for June

All but one of the eight Social Welfare offices in the county recorded increases in June.

According to the latest figures from the Central Statistics Office, there were over 13,000 people on the Live Register in June – a jump of 516 on the previous month.

However year on year the numbers show a drop of over 1,300 in the county.

The biggest increases last month were in the north of the county – the offices in Nenagh, Roscrea and Thurles recorded a jump of nearly 350 between them.

In the South of the County there was an increase of 168 between the five social welfare offices – just Carrick on Suir saw a drop of 4 in the month.

Nenagh recorded a rise of 150 in June – the highest in the county.

Independent County Councillor Michael O'Meara says the area around Lower Ormond has been particularly badly hit.

The Social Welfare Office in Thurles saw a rise of nearly 140 in the numbers signing on the Live Register last month.
