Setback for Roscrea development plans

The Heritage Department has lodged an objection to the redevelopment of the old Tesco site in the town centre amid fears it will negatively impact on the nearby historic castle.

Last month TCORP Properties Ltd were granted planning permission for a major upgrade of the Roscrea Shopping Centre on Castle Street – Plans included the demolition of existing buildings and the construction of new retail outlets and health centre spanning three storeys.

It’s estimated that dozens of new jobs would be created.

However the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaelteacht has now lodged an objection to the plans with An Bord Pleanala.

It feels the development is too large in scale, obtrusive in relation to views to and from nearby Roscrea Castle and the Round Tower and that the overall design is not in harmony with the streetscape of the town.

The submission also goes on to state that the OPW has concerns too about the project's scale and bulk adding  while the Department is not opposed in principal to the redevelopment of the old Tesco site -it should not be in the proposed form.
