Rescue package for workers at Sean Kelly Sports Centre

A rescue package is being put in place in a bid to secure the future of the Sean Kelly Sports Centre in Carrick on Suir.

Talks are taking place with the Workplace Relations Commission.

However it's understood some job losses are on the cards.

Mounting costs mean the Sean Kelly Sports Centre in Carrick on Suir is facing closure.

People in the area have been told to 'use it or lose it' by the board of the centre at Tinvane on the Waterford Road.

A significant drop in the numbers using the facility combined with a quadrupling of insurance costs has left the centre on the brink of closure.

Staff have already taken pay cuts in recent years with more on the cards.

A rescue plan is being put in place with talks underway between SIPTU and the board of the centre at the Workplace Relations Commission.

Chairman of the Sean Kelly Sports Centre David Skelly says the plan they are proposing would save ten jobs – however this would necessitate two redundancies.

Traditionally staff have been paid for lunch break – the centre would not be covering these into the future.

Speaking to Tipp FM News today, David Skelly said their primary objective is to keep the centre open with a secondary aim of retaining as many jobs as possible.
