Relief as Tipp students receive Leaving Cert results

Schools across the Premier County opened just after nine to allow pupils to pick up the results in person -while they were available online at 12.

Principals have been reporting very good results at many Tipperary schools – in line with the national trend while a number of pupils here attained the elusive 7 and 8 straight A1s

Mathew Kavanagh – who attends the Cistercian College in Roscrea, is among them. He received 8 A1s in his exams.

The Urlingford native is planning to go on and study medicine. He told Tipp FM that he’s delighted with his results.

Meanwhile one student at the Presentation College in Clonmel received 7 A1s.

Elsewhere, the Education Minister says she will do everything in her power to make it affordable for students to go to college.

The latest report from the Irish League of Credit Unions revealed that parents and students are having to work longer hours to meet third level education bills.

Minister Jan O'Sullivan said half of all third level students are now qualifying for a grant.

She says finance should not be a barrier to education.

“About 50 percent of students now are qualifying for grants, which is a very high percentage” she said.

“And I think that's very important and I want to make sure that that's still available to students – cause I would feel very strongly that finance shouldn't be a barrier to any student going on to develop their full potential” she added.
