Heated debates are expected today as Tipperary's councillors decide whether to increase the property tax in the Premier.
Council officials have proposed a 10% hike in the charge which is used to cover the cost of running the local authority, however, Tipperary does not earn enough to run the county so it's subsidised from a national fund.
For the last two years, councillors have voted to keep the rate unchanged…If agreed to by the 40 elected representatives, a 10% increase would mean homeowners would pay an average of €50 extra a year.
Several councillors have already stated they would not be voting for the increase….while Thurles Independent Jim Ryan says he wants a decrease.
