Fr Joe McDonald told mourners at St Michael's Church in Ballyfermot in Dublin that the 33 year old should be remembered by his life – rather than in the manner of his death.
Investigations are continuing into his death.
His remains were found over 2 weeks ago in the canal at Ardclough in Co Kildare.
