Parts of Tipperary without cover at weekends for emergency water repairs

The county is among six local authorities across the country where Irish Water is said to have no emergency cover in place at weekends or outside of business hours.

The Irish Independent reports that households faced with a burst pipe on a Friday evening will have to wait more than 60 hours for a response from Irish Water.

When a customer rings the Irish Water call centre, the adviser raises a service request on behalf of the customer and it is acted on by the local authority the next working day when business resumes.

Where the can the company say they provide an out-of-hours service based on the arrangements that local authority staff would have previously had in place.

However, there are six local authorities who did not have, prior to Irish Water being set up, and currently do not have, an official out of hours service after 5pm and at weekends – these are South Tipperary, Galway County, Laois, Leitrim, Westmeath and Wicklow.

An average family will be facing a charge in the region of €240 each year for their water service from next year.
